Beach

So this is weird. Yesterday, I stumbled upon a pack of #Polaroid photos I took a few years back on Chocolate film and never scanned. I scan everything. But these don’t appear on my hard drive. None of them have been posted.

This is the beach outside a hotel on Long Beach Island. In the beforetimes, every November I would get together with friends and spend a week on LBI trying to hear AM radio stations from across the ocean. My guess is that I took this with my second Land 250 around 2015. My current chocolate film shots are a lot lighter than this, very little contrast. This is what it originally looked like. Belford Harbor

I shot my last pack of Polaroid 100 Chocolate in August. Figured I better get to it before it went bad. Out of the pack of 10, I got 9.5 photos.

A week after shooting it, I saw packs for sale on *Bay for $1200. Oh well, there goes my fortune….

Vanessa

Breaking my boycott of Instagram to celebrate #polaroidweek (find me on glass.photo where I’ve been posting like crazy for the past couple of months).

My friend Vanessa makes tintypes, trading under the name @armadillotintype in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. About seven hours ago, we went to see her at Bell Works in Holmdel to get a tintype made of my wife (25 years ago, when this was still Bell Labs, my wife and I both worked in this amazing building). I brought my #polaroid 195 loaded with my next-to-last roll of Polaroid #sepia 1500 #film and shot this portrait of the artist with her tools. Tree

I shot this tree in front of our house this morning because it’s summer and it’s Friday and it’s my birthday so I took the day off and wanted to do something with it. Shot on my #speedgraphic using a @kodak #aeroektar178mm lens wide open and my new #chromagraphica #4x5 #wetplatecollodion film holder that arrived a couple of days ago. I shot three photos, and this was probably the most technically correct. I wanted to work on my collodion pouring technique since my first plates had so many problems. This was my second attempt at this shot this morning; the first had a developer island. So I bumped up the amount of developer I was pouring on the plate from 15ml to 20ml and that seems to have solved that issue. #allthroughalenspodcast #largeformat #wetplate #tintype #filmphotography

Hoops

A couple of years ago, @ifleming wrote an article for Emulsive about using a 35mm film splicer to perforate unperforated 35mm film and use it in 126 Instamatic cameras. I have now replicated this. Shot this with my @kodak Instamatic 500 on Agfa Aviphot ASP 400S sourced from @macodirect in Germany. I used a #fakmatic adapter rather than a repurposed original 126 cartridge this time. #film #filmphotography #filmphotographic #allthroughalenspodcast

Shot in Asbury Park with my #contaxiiia on @kodak Eastman No. 10 #film that expired in March, 1931 (yes, the film expired more than 90 years ago). When Wawa wanted to build in Wildwood, they went before the zoning board and were told that their usual cookie cutter store wouldn’t cut it and they should attempt to fit in with the vernacular Doo-Wop architecture that defines the city. Lights at the beach

I took my #contaxiii when we were on vacation recently in Cape May. One of the rolls I shot was a too-tightly-wound roll of #kodak2238. I wound up with a whole roll of overlapping photos. Some of them didn’t suck. Battery Potter.

I’m still debating whether to delete my account here. I’m not happy with the increasing Facebookification of Instagram. When @kevin and @mikeyk were still in charge, their taste ruled and I could overlook ownership issues. They’re gone.

Returning to the theme of Hot Texas Wieners, Libby’s Lunch in Paterson is one of the first places to originate the dish. They’re located near the Great Falls in Paterson on land owned by the city. Unfortunately, they are on the verge of shutting down, as their landlord, the aforementioned city of Paterson, is not happy that they haven’t received rent in the past three years. Oops. Home of the Hot Dog

In a corner of northern New Jersey, the local delicacy is a grilled hot dog covered in onions, mustard, and chili. This is referred to for some reason as a Hot Texas Wiener. River View East in Elmwood Park is one of the classic spots that specializes in this gastronomic experience. I’ve eaten here often, as it is about a mile from where my wife grew up. First roll through my new-to-me Contax III. Eastman 5222 Double X (via @cinestillfilm) developed in #rodinal 1:50 for 11 minutes. The camera has an f/1.5 Sonnar lens, and I’m loving it. I’ve had three Kiev rangefinders, which are essentially the same camera, but this one feels more solid than the later ones I had, which were made in the 1970s. My Kiev II from 1952 fells very similar to this, though. All my Kiev’s are broken, sadly, and it’s hard to find anyone willing to fix them. The 1952 would be worth fixing. Anyway, I’m loving this 1936 Contax.
