I’m still debating whether to delete my account here. I’m not happy with the increasing Facebookification of Instagram. When @kevin and @mikeyk were still in charge, their taste ruled and I could overlook ownership issues. They’re gone.

I shot this on a @pictoriographica dry plate on my @intrepidcamera 8x10 using a #chromagraphica dry plate holder that I got from the Kickstarter done by Jason and @chromacamera. Unprotected Beach. No Swimming.

Another J. Lane #dryplate shot last weekend at Gateway National Recreation Area — Sandy Hook, our local national park. I think my plate holders have some focus issues, like they’re not holding the plate in the proper plane. One reason why I look forward to getting the new holders that @pictoriographica and @chromacamera did a Kickstarter for a few months ago.

HoJo

The old Howard Johnson’s on the boardwalk is one of the most distinctive buildings on the shore. One of these days I’ll stop referring to it as what it used to be and start referring to it as what it is now (another restaurant with much better food). Another test of my repurposed Graflex plate holders with 3D printed parts, using #dryplate from @pictoriographica.

Convention Hall

Shot this past Saturday with my 1953 Pacemaker #speedgraphic on J. Lane #dryplates from @pictoriographica. This plate was from batch 11, and expires n April of this year. I think it’s stood up pretty well. I bought these plates to use in a bagmag I got with my Graflex SLR RB Series B, but the leather tire on it one of the first times I used it, so I’ve been without a way to shoot 4x5 plates for a while. Until recently, anyway, when I 3D printed a few parts to turn a couple of old Graflex film pack holders into plate holders. This is one of my test shots to check if it’s working. I think it is. When I get the plateholders from the Kickstarter I backed from @chromacamera and @pictoriographica , I’ll probably start using these repurposed film packs for their intended purpose, wet plate.

Shot on @pictoriographica Speed Plate (ISO 25) with my 1902 Century Studio No. 5. No-name Symmetric lens in a B&L pneumatic shutter, 1/5 second @ f/32. Developed by inspection in HC-110 Dilution B, 5 minutes or thereabouts. This is an interesting shot. There’s a 4.25 x 4.25 print of this one, but the negative is 5 x 7. With the masking, it’s like she shot this specifically to print on that paper. Like the first photo in this series, this shows four generations of the Garner family women: Harriet Murray Garner, the matriarch; Eleanora Garner Colton, Harriet’s daughter and the photographer of all these shots; Eleanora’s daughter Loui Colton Johnston, and Loui’s daughter Helen Johnston.

Another family shot taken in the yard, this time as a 5x7 dry plate negative. I find it interesting that all these shots are of the women in the family. There are no group shots that show the men and women together. The only shots of men are solo shots (there’s one exception to that that I haven’t posted, and I probably won’t post because it’s racist in a way that would be familiar to the residents of today’s Virginia), or the one shot showing a husband and wife with their dog. I’m curious why there’s that omission in the photos from rural Iowa ca. 1899-1900.

There are a couple of photos in the collection that don’t include any people. Like this. I don’t think this is the main house. Between the pictures of parts of the house and photos I’ve seen online as part of a campaign to save the Garner House, which is apparently in a state of disrepair today, I think this may be an outbuilding on the property.

Beg!

I love this shot. Some things never change. I don’t know who these two people are, but they’re part of the extended Garner family. The lady here appears in the photo I posted a few days ago of all the women in a tree, as well as in another group photo I’ll be posting later.

This is another of the 4.25 x 4.25 negatives. If you haven’t been following along, I bought a set of prints and glass dry plate negatives shot in Iowa around 1899 and/or 1900. I’ve been posting them for the past week. You can see them all under the hashtag #garnerfamilyarchive .

I think this is a self-portrait of Eleanora. It seems to have been taken at the same time as the first photo in this series that I posted, the 4 generations shot. This is another 4.25 x 4.25 negative. That other photo was shot on 5x7. Maybe she had two different cameras?

No notes on this one, either. Negative only, no print, another one of the oddball 4.25 x 4.25 plates. Most of the photos in this archive are of the women in the family. I assume this must have been taken at a holiday gathering. There are at least two sets of siblings in here just judging by the looks and dress.

I’m not sure who this is. This is one of the negatives with no corresponding print, so no documentation, and I don’t see this gentleman in any other shots. It’s not Wesley Garner. He died on January 1, 1889, and these photos are from a good 10 years after that. Given that the photos were shot by Wesley’s daughter Eleanora, I’m going to guess that this is likely to be her husband Francis, who was 57 years old in 1900.

This dry plate negative is a size I’ve never seen: 4.25 inches by 4.25 inches. That obviously doesn’t fit into the modern large format system of 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, etc. but I also don’t see it in the older plate system, either. I see glass half plate listed as 6.5 x 4.25, and quarter plate as 4.25 x 3.25. But it must have been a thing. The negatives are stored in a box of paper that was 4.25 x 4.25, presumably for contact printing exactly this kind of negative.

Harriet Murray Garner with her great-granddaughter, Helen Johnston. Helen looks to be maybe 8 or 9 years old here, and she was born in February, 1891, so this photo, scanned from a print, appears to be from about 1899 or 1900. More than one photo of Helen shows her with her face in a book. She must have been pretty smart. By 1925, she had her M.D. degree and was working as a physician in Des Moines. She died in Riverside, California, in June, 1969, and was buried back home in Columbus City, Iowa. I can’t find any record of her ever marrying.

This is one of several prints for which there is no negative.

4 generations

Last month, I bought a collection of glass negatives and prints on one of the auction sites. It was billed as part of the archive of the Wesley Garner family of Columbus City, Iowa. One of Wesley’s daughters, Eleanora Garner Colton, was a photographer, and she shot a number of glass plates of her family. She appears to have developed and printed her own work. This 5x7 plate appears to have been shot around 1900. It includes Wesley’s widow, Harriet Murray Garner, their daughter Eleanora, Eleanora’s daughter Loui Colton Johnston, and Loui’s daughter Helen.

The 5x7 plates and prints of two of the plates, came in a box of M. A. Seed Extra Rapid Dry Plates.

From what I found on Ancestry.com, Harriet was born in 1818. She died in 1903.
