Beach

So this is weird. Yesterday, I stumbled upon a pack of #Polaroid photos I took a few years back on Chocolate film and never scanned. I scan everything. But these don’t appear on my hard drive. None of them have been posted.

This is the beach outside a hotel on Long Beach Island. In the beforetimes, every November I would get together with friends and spend a week on LBI trying to hear AM radio stations from across the ocean. My guess is that I took this with my second Land 250 around 2015. My current chocolate film shots are a lot lighter than this, very little contrast. This is what it originally looked like. Belford Harbor

I shot my last pack of Polaroid 100 Chocolate in August. Figured I better get to it before it went bad. Out of the pack of 10, I got 9.5 photos.

A week after shooting it, I saw packs for sale on *Bay for $1200. Oh well, there goes my fortune….

Vanessa

Breaking my boycott of Instagram to celebrate #polaroidweek (find me on glass.photo where I’ve been posting like crazy for the past couple of months).

My friend Vanessa makes tintypes, trading under the name @armadillotintype in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. About seven hours ago, we went to see her at Bell Works in Holmdel to get a tintype made of my wife (25 years ago, when this was still Bell Labs, my wife and I both worked in this amazing building). I brought my #polaroid 195 loaded with my next-to-last roll of Polaroid #sepia 1500 #film and shot this portrait of the artist with her tools. My wife Laura is part of a team that takes care of a feral cat who lives in the parking garage at her work. With lockdown, the occasional short trips we make are a pleasant diversion, at least for us. Parkway

Every Sunday, we go up to my father-in-law’s house in northern New Jersey to bring him provisions for the coming week. In normal times, the Garden State Parkway is very busy on an average Sunday afternoon. These days, not so much. Ouchy balls

As long as we’ve lived in this house (and my parents bought it in 1977, so it’s been a while), the yard has been filled with these things. I never knew what they were beyond being seed pods for a tree, but taking this photo of one on our deck spurred me to look it up. Behold the seed pod of the Sweet Gum tree, the scourge of the barefooted everywhere.

Angel

One of the best things about the SX-70 is how close it can focus. None of this 3-4 feet crap. No. 10 inches, or even closer if you have the close-up lens attachment. Makes it the perfect camera to use when the world is falling apart and you can’t leave your house for fear of catching a deadly disease so you start looking to see if there are some little things around the house that you haven’t noticed. So all my shots this week for #roidweek are going to be from my @mintcamera #slr670s, the best version of the SX-70 available. #polaroidweek2020 #polaroidweek #polaroid #mintcamera #film #filmphotography #fscpolaroid

The SX70 came out in 1972. That’s 47 years ago.

Last month, I found a mint SX70. The leather on it had one mark but was otherwise pristine. The camera came with its original manuals. It even had the dark slide from a pack of film from back then. It also had a pack of film with four unused shots. I had to try.

Polaroid chemicals have trouble lasting 10 years in integral films. So I didn’t expect anything. Still, I moved the film to a recent cartridge with a working battery. I took the camera outside, not expecting to get anything. And sure enough, I didn’t get anything. Oh well. It was fun anyway. Seems like a good way to end Polaroid Week (even if it’s officially already over since it’s after midnight here). Fin. #polaroidweek #polaroidweek2019 #roidweek #roidweek2019

Bill.

For the past 25 years, I’ve helped put out a magazine about shortwave radio. My friend Bill was the publisher. The last Saturday of every month, I would take the printed mechanicals of the magazine to his house in Levittown, PA. We would put everything together, then bring it to the printer. Then we would mark another job well done with Chinese food. This picture is from about ten years ago, showing Bill going through the mechanicals and putting them in order. I shot it on the short-lived Polaroid Sepia 100 in a Polaroid 250.
