Beach

So this is weird. Yesterday, I stumbled upon a pack of #Polaroid photos I took a few years back on Chocolate film and never scanned. I scan everything. But these don’t appear on my hard drive. None of them have been posted.

This is the beach outside a hotel on Long Beach Island. In the beforetimes, every November I would get together with friends and spend a week on LBI trying to hear AM radio stations from across the ocean. My guess is that I took this with my second Land 250 around 2015. My current chocolate film shots are a lot lighter than this, very little contrast. This is what it originally looked like. Belford Harbor

I shot my last pack of Polaroid 100 Chocolate in August. Figured I better get to it before it went bad. Out of the pack of 10, I got 9.5 photos.

A week after shooting it, I saw packs for sale on *Bay for $1200. Oh well, there goes my fortune….

Breaking my boycott of Instagram to celebrate #polaroidweek (find me on glass.photo where I’ve been posting like crazy for the past couple of months).

My friend Vanessa makes tintypes, trading under the name @armadillotintype in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. About seven hours ago, we went to see her at Bell Works in Holmdel to get a tintype made of my wife (25 years ago, when this was still Bell Labs, my wife and I both worked in this amazing building). I brought my #polaroid 195 loaded with my next-to-last roll of Polaroid #sepia 1500 #film and shot this portrait of the artist with her tools. My wife Laura is part of a team that takes care of a feral cat who lives in the parking garage at her work. With lockdown, the occasional short trips we make are a pleasant diversion, at least for us. Parkway

Every Sunday, we go up to my father-in-law’s house in northern New Jersey to bring him provisions for the coming week. In normal times, the Garden State Parkway is very busy on an average Sunday afternoon. These days, not so much. Ouchy balls

As long as we’ve lived in this house (and my parents bought it in 1977, so it’s been a while), the yard has been filled with these things. I never knew what they were beyond being seed pods for a tree, but taking this photo of one on our deck spurred me to look it up. Behold the seed pod of the Sweet Gum tree, the scourge of the barefooted everywhere.

Angel

One of the best things about the SX-70 is how close it can focus. None of this 3-4 feet crap. No. 10 inches, or even closer if you have the close-up lens attachment. Makes it the perfect camera to use when the world is falling apart and you can’t leave your house for fear of catching a deadly disease so you start looking to see if there are some little things around the house that you haven’t noticed. Mill Brook

I needed to get a Mamiya Press lens for the @cameradactyl Brancopan that I’m building, and I wanted a wide one to accentuate the panoramic nature of the shots that the camera is designed for. All the appropriate lenses I could find on eBay were like $300 apiece. Then there was a Mamiya Press Universal camera on the site that had a 75mm lens attached. The price? $300. So it was like getting the camera for free. It came with a Polaroid back, so when it showed up today, I loaded it with some Fuji FP-100C and went into the backyard for a few minutes. First reasonable shot on the new @supersense #oneinstantfilm that came today. Belford Harbor, not too far from my house, #polaroid195, developed for three minutes after I got home on this cold, blustery day. Looks like this shot had a tiny issue with a pod not popping, as the entire image didn’t develop. Not surprised about that, as the pods are supplied by the 20x24 project and I saw the same kind of behavior with New55 when 20x24 supplies their pods. (@new55film makes their own pods now and seem to have solved this issue on their film.) All in all, I’m delighted with how the film works. I look forward to trying it out in bright sunlight over the holidays instead of on the gloomy gray day we had here today.

Then there were the failures. One of the settings on my Polaroid 195 was causing the shutter to delay opening for 2-3 seconds, and I got some lovely shots of the view as I was lowering the camera. At $3 a shot (I bought this 664 recently at World of Photography in Columbus, and it wasn’t cheap....) Anyway, I kinda like this one. #polaroid #polaroid195 #type664 #film #filmphotography

First day of the season

We had lunch at Moby’s on Saturday. It was their first day open this year. They had a limited menu as a result, but they had the beer the local brewery makes just for them on tap, so it’s all good.

Polaroid 195, Polaroid Type 664 film expired in 2005. I shot at box speed and it was fine, exposure was spot on. Love the kind of sepia tone the expired film gives.... #polaroid #polaroid195 #type664 #peelapartfilm #film #filmphotography
