Tree

I shot this tree in front of our house this morning because it’s summer and it’s Friday and it’s my birthday so I took the day off and wanted to do something with it. Shot on my #speedgraphic using a @kodak #aeroektar178mm lens wide open and my new #chromagraphica #4x5 #wetplatecollodion film holder that arrived a couple of days ago. I shot three photos, and this was probably the most technically correct. I wanted to work on my collodion pouring technique since my first plates had so many problems. This was my second attempt at this shot this morning; the first had a developer island. So I bumped up the amount of developer I was pouring on the plate from 15ml to 20ml and that seems to have solved that issue. #allthroughalenspodcast #largeformat #wetplate #tintype #filmphotography

HoJo

The old Howard Johnson’s on the boardwalk is one of the most distinctive buildings on the shore. One of these days I’ll stop referring to it as what it used to be and start referring to it as what it is now (another restaurant with much better food). Another test of my repurposed Graflex plate holders with 3D printed parts, using #dryplate from @pictoriographica.

Convention Hall

Shot this past Saturday with my 1953 Pacemaker #speedgraphic on J. Lane #dryplates from @pictoriographica. This plate was from batch 11, and expires n April of this year. I think it’s stood up pretty well. I bought these plates to use in a bagmag I got with my Graflex SLR RB Series B, but the leather tire on it one of the first times I used it, so I’ve been without a way to shoot 4x5 plates for a while. Until recently, anyway, when I 3D printed a few parts to turn a couple of old Graflex film pack holders into plate holders. This is one of my test shots to check if it’s working. I think it is. When I get the plateholders from the Kickstarter I backed from @chromacamera and @pictoriographica , I’ll probably start using these repurposed film packs for their intended purpose, wet plate.

Every November, I travel to Long Beach Island here in New Jersey to listen to distant radio stations on the mediumwave band (what we usually refer to as “AM” here in North America) with a bunch of friends. This is called a DXpedition. We put up big antennas and try to hear stations from Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. DXing has largely moved from traditional radios to computer-connected software designed radios. One neat thing about these is that you can record the entire band as the radio is hearing it and play it back later exactly as it was when you were there. We will be digging stations out of the mud for months as a result.
