No notes on this one, either. Negative only, no print, another one of the oddball 4.25 x 4.25 plates. Most of the photos in this archive are of the women in the family. I assume this must have been taken at a holiday gathering. There are at least two sets of siblings in here just judging by the looks and dress.

I’m not sure who this is. This is one of the negatives with no corresponding print, so no documentation, and I don’t see this gentleman in any other shots. It’s not Wesley Garner. He died on January 1, 1889, and these photos are from a good 10 years after that. Given that the photos were shot by Wesley’s daughter Eleanora, I’m going to guess that this is likely to be her husband Francis, who was 57 years old in 1900.
This dry plate negative is a size I’ve never seen: 4.25 inches by 4.25 inches. That obviously doesn’t fit into the modern large format system of 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, etc. but I also don’t see it in the older plate system, either. I see glass half plate listed as 6.5 x 4.25, and quarter plate as 4.25 x 3.25. But it must have been a thing. The negatives are stored in a box of paper that was 4.25 x 4.25, presumably for contact printing exactly this kind of negative.

Harriet Murray Garner with her great-granddaughter, Helen Johnston. Helen looks to be maybe 8 or 9 years old here, and she was born in February, 1891, so this photo, scanned from a print, appears to be from about 1899 or 1900. More than one photo of Helen shows her with her face in a book. She must have been pretty smart. By 1925, she had her M.D. degree and was working as a physician in Des Moines. She died in Riverside, California, in June, 1969, and was buried back home in Columbus City, Iowa. I can’t find any record of her ever marrying.
This is one of several prints for which there is no negative.

4 generations
Last month, I bought a collection of glass negatives and prints on one of the auction sites. It was billed as part of the archive of the Wesley Garner family of Columbus City, Iowa. One of Wesley’s daughters, Eleanora Garner Colton, was a photographer, and she shot a number of glass plates of her family. She appears to have developed and printed her own work. This 5x7 plate appears to have been shot around 1900. It includes Wesley’s widow, Harriet Murray Garner, their daughter Eleanora, Eleanora’s daughter Loui Colton Johnston, and Loui’s daughter Helen.
The 5x7 plates and prints of two of the plates, came in a box of M. A. Seed Extra Rapid Dry Plates.
From what I found on Ancestry.com, Harriet was born in 1818. She died in 1903.

Beach at Marineland
Shot this in 2017 while visiting my mom in Florida. I remember being very disappointed when I developed this roll of Bergger Panchro 400 that I’d put through my Pentax 67. I don’t know if the film was bad, or I mishandled it, or my fixer was bad, or maybe it just doesn’t like Rodinal (that’s probably it; I haven’t shot a roll of the film that didn’t come out looking like this). Another shot from my 1902 Century Studio No. 5 #5x7 camera on #ilforddirectpositivepaper. As the name of the camera suggests, this is really intended to be an indoor camera, but I took it outside the other day and shot this view of my backyard. It’s a little overexposed I think. I exposed it for 10 seconds and maybe it really only wanted 5.
I got some J. Lane dry plates the other day for the dry plate holder I bought. I hope to give that a try in the next day or two.

Pedro and Enid
Another shot on #ilforddirectpositivepaper with the 1902 Century No. 5 #5x7camera and the #foldio. I wanted to see how narrow the depth of field was on the no-name brass lens that came with the camera, so I placed Enid slightly behind Pedro (the mascot of everyone’s favorite racist tourist trap, South of the Border). I probably should have placed her closer to Pedro so you could see that; this looks like they’re in the same plane, like this is a mistake. Also, it’s not framed great, as you can see the edge of the Foldio on the right. Notes for the next try.
I got a dry plate holder for the camera and some J. Lane dry plates, so I hope to give that a try sometime this week.

Little Enid
This is the first really decent shot I’ve gotten out of the 1902 Century Studio No. 5 camera that I bought in Florida over Thanksgiving. I used a #Foldio 3 fold up studio with a black-ish backdrop and the included LED lighting to do this. I would have liked to get closer and have her fill more of the frame, but the camera only has so much bellows extension. This was shot with #ilforddirectpositivepaper at an ISO around 2, 5 seconds of exposure. It was probably underexposed at that, because it took several minutes to develop. I’m happy with this. The camera works.

Creek.
First shot from the vintage 1902 Century No. 5 I bought in St. Augustine a couple of weeks ago. This is shot in my back yard on 5x7 Ilford Direct Positive paper, because I’m not set up yet to develop 5x7 film. I think the reason the left half is completely white is that the sheet fell out of the holder and into the camera when I reinserted the dark slide and fell ins funny shape that caused part of it to be completely overexposed when I retrieved the sheet. And it’s blurry because I wasn’t using a tripod for a roughly 3 second exposure. Even with all that, I love it.
I hope to get a better idea of what the lens can do with a couple of shots I took this afternoon.

I’ve tentatively dated the camera I bought last week in Florida based on the lens that came with it. I found a bunch of yearly catalogs from Rochester Optical & Camera Co. online. On page 71 of the 1902 catalog I found a close match for this lens and shutter. Swipe left to see. This was the only year I saw with this rendering of the company name.
The shutter didn’t appear to work at first, but as I kept trying, it started to work intermittently, then regularly. The timings are off, especially the slow speeds, but I think cleaning the cylinders may help improve that.
