One of my first shots on @new55film PN400, the faster #new55film that came out recently. At box speed, the prints are somewhat fainter than I would like. The instructions say for a thinner negative and thicker print, try shooting at EI 800. I’ll have to give that a try, even though the histogram on the scan of my negative indicated that even at box speed, it was a little overexposed, although certainly within the capabilities of the negative.
Oh, and in case anyone was wondering what film stock the underlying negative was, check out the right side of the print. 🙂

First reasonable shot on the new @supersense #oneinstantfilm that came today. Belford Harbor, not too far from my house, #polaroid195, developed for three minutes after I got home on this cold, blustery day. Looks like this shot had a tiny issue with a pod not popping, as the entire image didn’t develop. Not surprised about that, as the pods are supplied by the 20x24 project and I saw the same kind of behavior with New55 when 20x24 supplies their pods. (@new55film makes their own pods now and seem to have solved this issue on their film.) All in all, I’m delighted with how the film works. I look forward to trying it out in bright sunlight over the holidays instead of on the gloomy gray day we had here today.

This showed up on my porch this morning. I’ve already taken it for a spin. It works! I had a pretty good idea what the results would look like, since I’ve shot New55 Color, which used the same P7 materials. Quite an accomplishment getting this to work with pack film cameras, though. Congratulations, @supersense, and thank you for keeping pack film alive.

I’m taking a course via @magnumlearn taught by @littlebrownmushroom. It’s basically videos where he talks about or demonstrates his approach to making photographs. In the section about photographing people, there is an assignment to photograph a stranger.
I am painfully shy and hate approaching strangers.
Funny enough, so was Alec Soth. Over the years, I’ve worked out a way to do this. I get them to approach me instead. And the bait I use is my cameras. If you take out a distinctive and/or iconic camera, people will approach you. Polaroids are good for this. I usually get someone coming up to me when I have my SX-70 out. I get more people approaching with a Polaroid pack film camera, like my old 250 or the 195 I picked up last year. But the best camera for bait that I’ve found is my Speed Graphic. There is something in the imagination of Americans that sees one and wants to know more. I always describe a cigar-chomping ambulance-chasing photographer in film noir films from the 1940s and 50s, basically Weegee, when I talk about the camera when people ask. I ask to take their picture, and most of the time, they say yes. And then I fuck it up like this because the rangefinder on the Speed Graphic is a pain in the ass.
I met this couple on the boardwalk in Asbury Park a few weeks ago on a freezing, blustery late November day. They were up from a town in southern Maryland. Waldorf, which they noted was kind of like Astoria, Queens, except not. The Polaroid 545 holder kind of obstructs the rangefinder, and I find it particularly difficult to focus with it when it’s mounted on that camera. And so I wind up spending $15 for a blurry shot like this because I worry about taking up too much of these kind people’s time.
I also forget to bring my business cards with me. I have these beautiful letter pressed cards that I printed myself with my Flickr and Instagram links and my e-mail. I never fucking bring them with me.

No Swimming Lifeguards Off Duty
Shot with my @intrepidcamera 8x10 on @ilfordphoto FP4+and contact printed to their Multigrade MKIV RC paper with a 2.5 grade contrast filter with the Intrepid enlarger supplying the light source. I shot this with a Schneider Symmar 180mm triple convertible lens. @catlabs.of.jp sold this saying it could cover 8x10 with room for movements (slide right to see the eBay listing), but the vignettes in all four corners suggest that this was, ummm, optimistic. This was at f/22, which is what every source of information on image circles that I’ve seen used to measure the circles. I think the lens covers if I remove the front lenses and use this as a 355mm lens.

Every November, I travel to Long Beach Island here in New Jersey to listen to distant radio stations on the mediumwave band (what we usually refer to as “AM” here in North America) with a bunch of friends. This is called a DXpedition. We put up big antennas and try to hear stations from Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. DXing has largely moved from traditional radios to computer-connected software designed radios. One neat thing about these is that you can record the entire band as the radio is hearing it and play it back later exactly as it was when you were there. We will be digging stations out of the mud for months as a result.

I’m taking a course through @magnumlearn taught by @littlebrownmushroom about photography. The first assignment is to make a list of #my5influences from outside photography, write them down, and see if you can find a connection. What I see in this list is a tension between order (clean design, straight lines) and chaos (punk rock, Ray Gun magazine/David Carson). Some of the items here combine them, like shortwave radio, where there are generally straightforward programs, but you can struggle to understand them through the noise and language barriers. #alecsothcourse
